Good Is The Enemy Of The Best
In business there is nothing worse than apathy. You’ve probably been in the presence of apathy when you have seen someone have a “Good Month” or “Land a Big Account”! You may even have personally experienced this. Where the “I did a good job” attitude, results in someone sitting on their ass, because frankly they can and have set their personal expectations too low.
So why is good the enemy of the best?
Well, first off it doesn’t have to be. Secondly, when we ask an employee to meet a specific target or even expect a certain result from ourselves, we need to have motivations to expect people or ourselves to go beyond our goals, even after they are achieved.
1. Ensure there is additional benefit for going above and beyond.
2. Recognize others and yourself for achieving targets, but make it fun and worthwhile to keep going.
3. Define the motivation for the action and encourage it.
Good is the enemy of the best, because we can’t be the best if we are just good! Good is great, and always will be.
Being the best will always be better than good!
